NCOC and Agip KCO IT and Interactive Training Methods

Embedding IT technology in the education process is one of the key priorities for Kazakhstan today. However, a needs assessment led by EFCA in Atyrau region demonstrated a lack of IT-competent teaching staff, especially in rural areas, in the training and implication of these technologies. The EFCA and Agip KCO, an NCOC agent company, started this project to provide teachers of Makat and Dossor settlements with the knowledge and skills to introduce IT and interactive teaching methods in the classroom. The EFCA partnered with the Makat District Department of Education and the Association of IT teachers of Kazakhstan to arrange a series of IT train-the-trainer sessions for teachers from the two areas: Makat and Dossor. Over the course of the project, 43 teachers participated in train-the-trainer sessions, which taught participants to use interactive boards, the internet, and create interactive lessons applying “flipcharts”, “active studio” and “movie maker” programs. The training sessions also provided teachers with the skills to study and teach online. These 43 teachers then conducted peer-to-peer IT trainings to 164 teachers, transmitting their newly acquired knowledge and skills. To motivate and ensure that teachers applied their skills after the training, the EFCA organized “The Best Teacher” competition. 13 teachers applied for the competition, each of which demonstrated their ability to develop interactive lessons with the use of IT tools. All of the nominees received prizes useful in the classroom, including USB modems, photo and video cameras, and laptops.

Project Results
  • As a post-training survey demonstrated, teachers increased their level of IT knowledge by 70 percent.
  • 2 TOT trainings were conducted and 43 teachers from 12 schools participated in TOT trainings and received professional development certificates;
  • 43 teachers conducted trainings for 164 teachers on interactive teaching methods;
  • Two libraries in the secondary schools of Makat and Dossor received reference training materials;
  • 13 teachers participated in “The Best Teacher” competition;
  • 3 winners were selected and awarded.

“Now we use interactive boards at every lesson and pupils are very interested to work with them. Thanks to IT & IM trainings, I know how to work with antivirus programs, how to make movies and use different computer programs and, what is most important, I feel confident passing my knowledge to my peers. Thank you for this opportunity!”TOT Participant of the project, Orazgalieva Gulzhakhan, English teacher from the school named after Sarkunanov.
